始めに  このブログは一体、何を企図したものなのか

1. of + 抽象名詞 = 形容詞    A man of learning is not always a man of wisdom.
2.名詞 + of a ---は形容詞に代用されて、「〜のような」の意味になる  He is an oyster of a man.
3. the + 単数形の普通名詞 ○その類全体を現す ○抽象の概念を現す  The bamboo is a kind of grass.
4.the + 形容詞 のパターン  The rich are not always happy.
5. 強調  He is honesty itself.

6. in itself = its own nature  Cabonic acid (gas) is not a poison in itself.
7. by oneself   I live all by myself.
8.for oneself   I like to do everything for myself.

10.  to oneself 独り言を言う 独占する  He often talks to himself when he is alone.


11 再帰動詞 意味を強めるためにのみ用いられる  He did it himself.
12. the very + 名詞  He is the very man for you.

13. 最上級で「どんな〜でも」と訳す  The wisest man cannot know everything.

17. the + 比較級  He is the last person to do such a thing.

18. 比較 no more ~ than と not ~ any more than  He can no more swim than a hammer can (swim).

19. few と a few  little と a little  The book has few faults.
20. seldom hardlyの使い方   He seldom goes out.

21. too ~ to の表現   You are too young to understand. 

23. cannot ~ too の使い方  We cannot praise him too much. = It is impossible to overpraise him.


24. one........the other と the one........the other の違い  We have two dogs ; one is white, and the other black.
25. this that の使い方 this は文章の中で近いもの、thatは遠いもの を指す   Health is above wealth, for this cannot give so much happiness as that.
26. anotherに関して  To know is one thing, to practice is another. 
27. 同一名詞の反復を避けるために、that is (複数は those of )を用いる  The tail of a fox is longer than that of a hare. 

28. 前文の叙述部分全部を反復する代わりに用いられる that  The ship was built in less than a year, and that in the midst of the war.

29.what with.....and what with what by.....and what by と言う 表現   

What with teaching, and what with writing, my time is fully taken up.

30. 関係代名詞 whatの用法 
I do what is right in my sight.

31. what you call と so-called の違い  

He has had no regular education ; he is what you call a self-made man.


32. what one is 今日あるのは と言う表現  Coal and iron made England what she is.
33. what is better, what is 比較級 と言う表現  He is handsome, clever, and what is better still, very rich.

34. all, what (持っている物は)これだけ と言う表現  This is all the money (that) I have. 
35. AとBの関係は、CとDの関係と同じ という言い方   Leaves are to the plant, what lungs are to the animal.
36. As...., so...の呼応 As you sow, so will you reap.の解析  As the lion is king of beasts, so is the eagle king of birds.
37. It is in --- as in ~  --- は ~ の如し という表現  It is in studying as in eating ; he who does it gets the benefits, and not he who sees it done. 
38. as ~ as any, as ~ as ever, the + 最上級 + that ever という表現  He is as brave as any man alive. 彼は世にも稀な勇者だ

39. in the world, on earth という表現  Who int the world are you?  一体全体お前は誰だ
40. something of a layer(法律を少しは知っている)と言う表現  He is something o a lawyer.      彼は法律も少しは知っている

41. as long as, so long as と言う表現  You shall want for nothing as long as I live.
42. so ~ as to と so as toと言う表現  I got up so early as to be in time for the express. 私は早く起きたから急行に間に合った
43.  so ~ that と so that という表現  I got up so early that I was in time for the express.
44. lest という that と同じ意味の接続詞の用法  I worked hard (for fear) lest I should fail.
45. have + the + 抽象名詞 + 不定詞  と言う表現  He had the kindness to show me the way.

46. such ~ as, such ~ that と言う表現   Do not trust such men as praise you to your face.
47. not so much ~ as と not so much as の 相違  He is not so much a scholar as a writer
48. as much, as many と言う表現  He is rather hot-tempered, and owns as much.
49. so much, so many と言う表現  Apple are sold at so much a piece.
50. like so many, as so many という表現    They worked hard like so many ants.

51. 同一の形容詞、副詞などの反復を避けるため so を用いる  It was very cold last evening - so much so that I could not stir out of doors.

52. if ever, if any, if ~ at all 言おうとする事を強く響かせるために勿体をつけて言うのに用いる表現  He is an Edokko, if ever there was one.
53. ever so = very, 譲歩を表す副詞節の中で使用されるever so --- = however という表現  He has ever so many children.

54. So I am と So am I の ちがい   You seem to be a physician --- So I am.

小論 なぜ英語が聴こえてこないのか?(平成25年9月16日)

55. 接続詞 before の妙訳 I had waited an hour before he appeared.
56. not ~ long before ---  長いこと ------ しないうちに、とうい妙訳 I had not waited long before he appeared.
57. 〜するや否や、〜 すると同時に、という表現 We had scarcely got on shore when it began to blow hard.
58. before long(近いうちに)という表現 I shall see him before long.
59. not ~ till --- :ーーーの時に初めて〜 という表現 People do not know the blessing health till they lose it.

60. 命令形 + and, or  そうすれば・・・、さもなければ・・・・ と言う表現 Persevere, and you will succeed.
61. 命令形 + and の変形  One more effort, and you will succeed.
62. 代動詞としてのdo、 強調としての do  I love you more than he does.
63. 現在、過去の規則的習慣 64. be used to 名詞(または doing)という表現 I am used to hardships.
65. 嗜好、才能を表す、have a ---- for / to ~ という表現  I have a liking for that man.He took me by the hand.

66. 体の一部を- - - - -すると言う英語独特の表現 He took me by the hand.

67. 分離を表す前置詞 of について  I will ease you of your burden.
68. 不定詞の副詞的用法 ・目的 ・原因 ・結果     He lived to see his son a great man.
69. 知覚動詞 ( see, feel, hear, know etc ) + 目的語 + 補語 I saw him enter the room.
70. have + 目的語 + Root-Infinitive (toのない不定詞) I will have some one come.
71. have + 目的語 + 過去分詞 という文型について I shall have my watch stolen.
72. 絶対不定詞・・・不定詞の成句 To tell the truth, I am tired of teaching.
73. to say nothing of ~ と言う表現 He knows German and French, to say nothing of English.
